Tell Me About Yourself Best Way to Respond

Tell Me About Yourself Best Way to Respond Tell Me About Yourself: Best Way to Respond Listen to Podcast Now: Listen in iTunes Download Audio File Confused about how to answer the dreaded Tell me about yourself question in a job interview? Join career expert and award-winning author Andrew LaCivita as he discusses tell me about yourself: best way to respond! This one goes out to all the people on my Tips for Work and Life Blog Subscription and my YouTube subscribers who’ve pelleted me with emails and comments asking to please shoot this video. This one’s for you! Why the “question” is terrible… This question is terrible for a couple of reasons. The first reason is related to the employer. First off, its lazy, its ineffective and it doesnt guarantee the employer it will actually get the information they need to make a good determination about whether youre a good fit for the company. Great interviewers design well thought out questions that elicit specific information that allows them to make those determinations. The second terrible is its even worse for you because it puts you in jeopardy of falling over one of the greatest tripwires in the job interview. The number one reason you do not get hired (see this video Job Interview Tip: The Number 1 Reason Why You Do Not Get Hired) is your inability to map your fit, value, qualifications, and skills to what the employer needs at the moment. Think about whats happening when youre in a job interview. You know youre fabulous. I know youre fabulous. The employer has even said youre fabulous by inviting you in for the interview. They think you’re qualified on paper. Theyve also think the same thing about all the other qualified candidates who are interviewing for the job. But, only one or maybe a couple of you are going to get hired. He or she who best maps their skills and qualifications to what the employer needs is going to be the person they hire! Three techniques to nail this… How do you know what they need to make that determination? Ask The first technique is my favorite. When the interviewer asks, “Please tell me about yourself,” just respond… “Hey, Mr. Lazy Interviewer Man, my background is lengthy and diverse. Is there any particular part of my background youd like me to discuss so you can make a determination about whether Im a good fit for your company?” Oh. I know there are a whole bunch of you out there saying, “Oh no, Andy I cant answer a question with a question! That’s just bad form. I was told never to do that!” Thats ridiculous. Its fine to answer a question with a question if you need clarification. Theyve likely asked you this question at the very beginning of the process or the very beginning of the interview. They dumped you into a wide-open field. Its okay for you to ask for some guidance. It only took you ten seconds to do that. Want to know what’s worse than you answering a question with a question? That’s you spending ten minutes talking about something thats fabulous about yourself that they dont care about or has nothing to do with helping them determine whether youre a good fit for what they need! Ouch. The more important thing we should focus on when you ask your questions is being able to anticipate the possible responses or outcomes. What could their replies be? The beautiful thing about your particular question is there are likely only two responses. When you ask, “Is there a particular part of my background, their response is going to be either yes there is or no there isnt. If they say, Yes, there is a particular part of your background. Here it is…, youre golden. Just respond to what they cited. Thats the best scenario. If they say, “No, there isn’t any particular area…,” here’s your pro tip. Always bring a copy of the job description with you to the interview. If you ask that question and they say, No, theres nothing in particular, then pick up the job description and say… Okay, Mr. Lazy Interviewer Man, it looks like based on your job description youre looking for these skills and qualifications and the role has these responsibilities, so Im going to share my background as it relates to the job description so you can get the insight to determine whether Im a good fit for your company. Use the pro tip I cited with the job description… For those of you who simply refuse to ask the clarifying questions, go directly to the pro tip I just mentioned using the job description. Don’t want to ask for clarification and don’t have a job description… Sometimes you don’t have a job description or it’s so thin you don’t have much to go on. No problem! Let’s make the assumption if you are in a job interview you have some inkling of what the job entails and what background best suits it. When the interview says, Please tell me about yourself, simply respond… “Okay, Id love to tell you about myself. I assume the job entails [this and that] and these would be the skills you’d be interested in knowing I have so you can make a good determination about whether Im a good fit for your company so Ill share my background as it relates to that. Now, youve given them your assumption about what the job entails and what you think are the important skills you need to have. If you are incorrect, theres not an interviewer out there who wouldnt stop you and say, Actually, Mr. Smart Job Candidate, thats not entirely true. Let me clarify that for you. Heres what the job really entails and here are the skills we really need to assess. Now, youve got the information you need, you just got it a different way. If they dont interrupt you, take some comfort in knowing youre on the right track and off you go. Want more help getting hired? FREEâ€"VERY POPULARâ€"WEBINAR: 3 Keys to Ace Any Job Interview. 5 Best Kept Secrets on How to Write a Resume - Wolfgang Career Executive Coaching

5 Best Kept Secrets on How to Write a Resume - Wolfgang Career Executive Coaching I don’t know many people who enjoy writing a resume. Usually it’s the last thing we want to do and we procrastinate to the very last minute. Instead of thinking about your resume as a drag, consider it the beginning of a conversation with your new job. Here’s a strategy on the best kept secrets on how to write a resume especially if you are short on time! Don’t think about the job you are writing about Don’t write from the perspective of the past. Write your past experiences with the future in mind. I know this sounds a bit crazy, but think about your next job. What kind of skills will your future employer want? Examples are, teamwork, communication, event planning, detail oriented, etc. Now, with that in mind, start your bullet with an action word that matches the skill. If you have your action-word aligned with your future employer’s favorite skill, now think of one task from your last job; not two or three or four. We are not summarizing our job tasks here. We are showcasing a specific set of skills and using our previous jobs to do that. Please don’t forget the outcome! I have seen many resumes simply forget the outcome. We are used to writing the tasks of our jobs. But the outcome is what makes the whole bullet sing your praises. What happened after you did the task? It doesn’t have to be that you increased revenue by 500% in the last quarter (unless you really did!). It just needs to be what happened next. For example, improved customer satisfaction, increased a positive team dynamic, streamlined processes for a faster result, etc. The most read bullet on a resume is Drum roll please the first bullet under your first experience. This sentence tends to be the most commonly read bullet on your entire resume. So if there is one bullet you might want to put the most attention to detail, it is this one. The first bullet needs to communicate to your true brilliance, your best accomplishment to date. For some reason, most people know what they are going to find in that first sentence (a task, a skill, etc) and its at the top of the page so our eyes naturally fall there first. So, this can determine whether the reader will skim anything else. The lesson, making sure that first sentence is excellent is a best practice on how to write a resume. Formatting is an important part of how to write a resume After reading the first bullet under the first experience, whatever the person reads next is subjective. Keep in mind though that a messy format can easily lose your ability to get into the ‘yes’ pile. All experiences need to look the same, have the title in the same spot, the company name in the same spot, the location, and dates ranges. This is so the reader can scan for information they want or is relevant to them. So, a consistent format can help serve a large audience, because no matter what they choose to look at next, the reader can find it easily. Sometimes less is more Remember, a resume is scanned, it is not read. This doesn’t get you out of figuring out how to write a resume with the best sentences because you don’t exactly know which sentence will be read. Also, the white space matters. Don’t cram as much as possible so that the reader has to strain to read the sentences. White spaces can also draw your eye. If the bullet looks easy to consume and not too wordy, it has a better chance of being read. Remember that you want to be able to talk about your experience, and if you are talking, you’re interviewing! I hope these resume writing tips help with the resume writing process. As always, Wolfgang Career Coaching can help you more with getting your great skills into a professionally written resume to make you stand out.
